Role Overview
The Sustaining Engineer is responsible for supporting products that are already released to production, ensuring their ongoing stability, quality, manufacturability, and cost effectiveness throughout the product lifecycle.
This role owns the product post-SOP (Start of Production) and serves as the technical interface between Engineering, Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, and Contract Manufacturers (CMs).
This is a highly hands-on technical role, requiring direct involvement in troubleshooting, failure analysis, testing, and implementation of corrective actions.
Key Responsibilities
Production & Field Support
- Act as the primary engineering owner for released products in mass production
- Support manufacturing issues, yield degradation, line stops, rework, and field failures
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for hardware, mechanical, and electrical issues
- Drive corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to closure
Engineering Change Management
- Own Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) for released products
- Evaluate change impact on cost, quality, manufacturability, and schedule
- Coordinate implementation of changes with CM, QA, SCM, and Operations
- Ensure proper documentation, revision control, and traceability
Manufacturing & CM Interface
- Serve as the technical point of contact with Manufacture engineer/Contract Manufacturers
- Support pilot runs, ramp-ups, and ongoing production
- Review and approve manufacturing process or material changes
- Drive DFM/DFA improvements and manufacturing robustness
Quality & Reliability
- Analyze production data, yield trends, DOA and RMA reports
- Support field returns and customer issues as needed
- Participate in audits, failure review boards, and quality reviews
- Ensure fixes are scalable, robust, and prevent recurrence
Cost & Lifecycle Optimization
- Support cost-reduction initiatives without impacting quality or reliability
- Qualify alternate components and second sources
- Support EOL management and supply risk mitigation
Documentation & Knowledge Management
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date technical documentation (BOMs, drawings, test procedures)
- Ensure production documentation reflects latest approved changes
- Capture lessons learned and standardize best practices
Requirements
- B.Sc. in Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, or related Engineering discipline
- 7+ years of experience in sustaining, manufacturing, or hardware engineering
- Experience supporting products in mass production environments
- Hands-on experience with ECO processes and change control
- Familiarity with OEM / EMS / Contract Manufacturing environments
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to work cross-functionally and manage multiple priorities
- Proven mechanical knowledge and practical experience in mechanical systems.
- Full proficiency in SolidWorks design software.
- Strong understanding of electromechanical assemblies and integration.
- Ability to investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues hands-on.
